DIAMOND PLAZA Ở ĐÂU?

A. Vocabulary: 1. Personal pronouns: are very necessary for any language-learner. In Vietnamese, A personal pronoun is the same regardless of its function in the sentence: a subject or an object. There is a variation of Personal Pronouns according to gender, age, social positions in Vietnamese that you will learn later once you have mastered these easy pronouns from this table.
2. Possessive Pronouns: You may be wondering how many new possessive pronouns that you have to stuff into your head? The good news is that you just need to add “của” in front of a personal pronoun and it will become a possessive pronoun. So easy, isn’t it?
B. Grammar: *Tips: A standard sentence structure in Vietnamese is Subject- Verb- Object. Doesn’t it sound like English?
TO BE Whatever language you learn, the first verb you are taught is “TO BE”. In Vietnamese, “TO BE” is constant (it never changes with Personal Pronoun or tense). “TO BE” is split into 3 words in Vietnamese:
1.“THÌ” : goes before adjective only. E.g: -Sách này thì hay. (This book is interesting) -Con mèo thì dễ thương. (The cat is lovely) But in every day conversation, “thì” is omitted: -Sách này hay. -Con mèo dễ thương.
2. “LÀ” : goes before Noun or Noun+Adj (remember, Adj is after Noun in Vietnamese) E.g: -Tom là một học sinh thông minh. (Tom is an intelligent student) -Tôi là con gái, bạn là con trai. (I am a girl, you are a boy)
3.“Ở” : indicates the place or position E.g: -Tháp Eiffel ở Paris. (The Eiffel Tower is in Paris) -Sách ở trên bàn. (The book is upon the table)
C. Conversation: Listen to the conversation between Tim and Phuong.
Explanations: You may notice the personal pronouns can change according to the speaker and who he/she is speaking to. In the conversation, “I” is *anh* for Tim and *em* for Phuong. “You” is *em* for Tim and *anh* for Phuong. It seems complicated but in the next lesson, we are going to show you the variety of personal pronouns and how to memorize it easily. In the video, “Rất vui được gặp anh” literally means “Glad to see you” (informal) and “Rất hân hạnh được gặp em” means “Honored to see you” (formal). However, I translated into “Nice to meet you” for you to understand easily. The conversation reviews you on the verb TO BE we have learned: Diamond Plaza ở đằng kia: Diamon Plaza is over there (to be + position ) Em là sinh viên năm ba trường Kinh Tế: I’m 3rd year student of Economics School (to be + Noun) Anh là giáo viên tiếng Anh (to be + Noun) Tiếng Việt của anh (thì) giỏi thật (to be + Adj but it’s omitted in this sentence)
